Papers of or about individuals from the Port Jefferson area or connected with Port Jefferson history, including members of the Barker, Barnum, Bayles, Brewster, Buckingham, Chambers and Conklin families. Items of note include deeds of Phineas T. Barnum of Bridgeport, CT, selling property in Port Jefferson to Caleb H. Davis, 1879-1887; maps and sketches of the Port Jefferson shipyard of James M. Bayles and Son, 1919, and papers on the sale of the Bayles shipyard to the New York Harbor and Dry Dock Corporation, 1921; historical notes on whaling on Long Island and information on the Bayles shipyard by James Woodhouse (b. ca. 1820), about being shipwrecked on the coast of Long Island; ms. "Journal of a voyage to Havanah [sic]," 1822; printed memoir of whaling voyages, by Daniel H. Buckingham, ca. 1909, and a letter to his niece and nephew, 1912; a deed for land in the town of Brookhaven, from Sidney S. Conklin to John P. L'Hommedieu, 1868.
